Pulse oximeter
As part of the ABCDE assessment , this device evaluates respiratory function and assesses the quality of blood oxygenation. Good oximetry ensures that the organs are properly oxygenated. It also assesses circulatory function.
Regarding the function of breathing [B]:
The pulse oxygen saturation (SPO2) must be between 94% and 99% according to the regulations of the countries concerned. It is important to always take the SpO2 in room air (without oxygen) before any possible oxygen administration. Depending on the patient's condition, pathology and the SpO2 result, the patient may be placed on oxygen.
Regarding the function of circulation [C]:
Heart rate (Even if manual palpation remains the priority!)
The quality of the measurement can be confirmed by the clinical condition of the patient and the quality of the pulse wave and frequency signal.
As a reminder, the clinical aspect (what we see and the patient's complaints) always takes precedence over the paraclinical aspect (the numerical data). Some pathologies can have a very positive result while presenting a clinical picture of distress. Example: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The patient can have an SpO2 of 100% and yet be in vital distress. A smoker can also give false results.
